Hip-Hop Legends Sugarhill Gang Wow Nashville's AB Hillsboro Village

The hitmakers brought “Rapper’s Delight” to the intimate Music City club for an epic night.

NASHVILLE, TN, UNITED STATES, May 13, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 track “Rapper’s Delight” was the first ever hit rap song, and on Friday (May 9), the group brought the party and a hip-hop history lesson to AB Hillsboro Village, currently making history of its own as Nashville’s only woman-owned music venue.

In an audience filled with Music City industry insiders like The Tennessean’s Marcus K. Dowling, the intimate club show also featured cocktails by Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the first spirits brand in the world to be named after a Black American.

The vibrant Hillsboro Village neighborhood that once hosted the Grand Ole Opry found the Sugarhill Gang reminding the Nashville crowd that East Coast hip-hop has its origins in community, too.

Call-and-response, dancing on the bar, mingling and rapping within the crowd, the group invited the audience to be as much a part of the show as the musicians. Favorites included their signature hit “Rapper’s Delight,” and others like “Apache” and “8th Wonder,” plus deeper cuts and covers from their decades of music.

After the performance, Sugarhill Gang chatted with an array of fans and posed for selfies and photos until the very end.

The venue proved an ideal backdrop for this coming-together of Nashville locals and New York-area hip-hop icons. Owned by Derek and Marcie Allen Van Mol, the latter of whom is a Nashville music industry vet whose work was centered in Manhattan for a decade, AB Hillsboro Village is the couple’s love letter to supporting the wide diversity of music that Nashville loves — not just the music it is best known for.
